The Louisiana Afro-Indigenous Society is a New Orleans based Nonprofit organization.
Our mission is to “Promote education and cooperative economics through unification within the African American/Afro-Indigenous American community by empowering community development and providing opportunities for artists and professionals. ”
The term Afro-Indigenous refers to members of the African diaspora community whose ascendants were enslaved people from both African countries and/or North American countries. We aim to incorporate and work closely with the Afro-Indigenous American community along with other ethnic groups in Louisiana.

Ninth Ward Gumbo Festival
The Ninth Ward Festival is a fundraising Event and the last festival of the year for the Louisiana Afro-Indigenous Society. This event allows residents of the Ninth Ward a chance to gather as a community and an opportunity for small businesses and entrepreneurs to earn revenue from sales. This is a low cost event and the LAIS has partnered with Burnell’s Lower 9th Ward Market, a renowned Black Owned grocery store, laundromat, and internet cafe to host this event. This festival not only brings exposure to his business, but also to the area, so residents of New Orleans and individuals that lived in the Ninth Ward pre-Katrina can see the potential the Lower Ninth Ward has to offer.
