“Be transformed by your love.
Be moved by holy intention.
Be steadied by your faith;
And take heart as you trod.”
-From the poem, Akoma, written by Sunni Patterson
This Juneteenth, (Wednesday, June 19, 2024), we will have a Community Vow Renewal/Marriage Ceremony in Congo Square. Officiated by Initiated Priest and Internationally Acclaimed Poet, Sunni Patterson, this Community Ceremony, allows all to bear witness to the wonder and magnificence of the uniting of not only the couples, but the coming together of their ancestral lineages. Believing in the power and transformative aspect of communal ritual, this collective renewing, recommitting, and reaffirming, is a way to show up for our individual families and loved ones, while also moving in divine purpose with unity of Spirit and the liberation of Community.
We know marriage is so much more than lovebirds gazing into each other’s eyes, it is the merging of both the masculine and feminine principles of the self. Ultimately, a wedding isn’t just a festive celebration marking a moment in time (although, it is that, as well), it is a rite of passage, and an outer reflection of an inner experience, serving as a mirror for us all.
Steeped in African centered cultural and spiritual traditions, the ceremony will include the Tasting of Sacred Elements- which are used to represent stages of life/marriage; Jumping the Broom; the reading of sacred texts/prayers; the exchange of vows (and rings if you already have them); and other ritualized customs that will empower our couples as they embark on their new journey ahead.
